Commissioner Deborah Sims (D-5th) says she has received death threats since voting to sustain Cook County Board President Todd Stroger’s veto of the sales tax rollback. Stroger’s office issued this statement on the threats today.
“I’ve heard the language in these threatening calls, and the racism and hatred in them is outrageous. I condemn these attacks on Commissioner Sims, and urge anyone with information about the perpetrator or perpetrators to step forward and share that information with law enforcement authorities immediately.
Dissent is part of the democratic process. But dissent is vastly different than the threat of attack or assault, be it verbal or physical, and these calls were assaultive and nakedly threatening. Commissioner Sims has my wholehearted support and appreciation not just for the courageous vote she took on Tuesday, but in any and all efforts to secure her safety and well being from those who threaten harm to her for actions.”
