China’s National Day was Sept. 28, and there was a parade in Chinatown to celebrate. This year there was a bit more political excitement at the parade than usual. Both of Illinois’ gubernatorial candidates, Gov. Pat Quinn and candidate Bruce Rauner, made a rare joint public appearance.
Down Wentworth Avenue in Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood, pranced three Chinese dragons, four pairs of dancing Chinese lions, five marching bands from different Chicago Public Schools, 20 decorated floats and representatives from 28 other groups.
Besides two gubernatorial candidates, Illinois Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and ABC co-anchor Judy Hsu also participated in the parade.
The warm Sunday added a little spice to China’s 65th birthday celebration in this hot wok of the Chinese community.
