Video: Lincoln Park Conservatory champions sustainability amid fundraising challenges

Rafael Rosa, the executive director of the Lincoln Park Conservatory, is leading the charge for sustainable urban development in Chicago through the lens of horticulture and education.

Under Rosa’s leadership, the conservatory has implemented many sustainability practices, including water conservation systems, energy-efficient greenhouse designs and community engagement programs that promote eco-friendly gardening.  “Chicago has set an impressive precedent for urban sustainability, and it’s crucial that cultural institutions like ours follow suit,” Rosa said. “Our practices not only support biodiversity but also educate the public on how small changes can have a significant environmental impact.”

Rosa acknowledged the challenges that come with running a nonprofit organization reliant on public and private funding.

“Fundraising for a nonprofit is always an uphill battle. People value green spaces, but securing consistent financial support requires constant advocacy and storytelling,” he explained. The conservatory often competes for grants alongside other essential community projects. Corporate sponsorships and individual donations provide vital support, but economic uncertainties can tighten budgets, making long-term planning difficult.

Despite these challenges, Rosa remained optimistic about the future. “Our work here isn’t just about plants; it’s about people and the planet. The Lincoln Park Conservatory is a testament to what can happen when a community rallies behind preserving nature in the heart of the city.” As Chicago continues its mission to become one of the most sustainable cities in the world, leaders like Rosa ensure that green spaces are not just preserved but also celebrated as hubs of education, inspiration, and environmental stewardship.
