Canon Says Don’t Miss the Supermoon in September

Chicago Talks, September 8, 2014

On September 9th, the astrological phenomena and amazing photo opp, “supermoon“, will dominate the night sky.

moon2The supermoon occurs when the full moon is positioned closer to the earth, and as a result, appears larger than normal, making it an ideal time to photograph the often hard to capture moon.

The days of “good enough” images and videos are long gone, especially with the rise in sharing on social media. Astrophotographers –both amateur and professional – can #bringit with Canon cameras and lenses by capturing higher quality images of the supermoon.

Here are a few tips and tricks courtesy of Canon to help #bringit to capture this spectacular lunar moment and tell better stories:

  • The correct exposure settings are the same as if you were photographing typical subjects outdoors on a bright, sunny day. This is because the surface of the Moon is fully illuminated by the Sun.
  • Consider the focal length of the lens. Generally speaking, the longer the focal length the better, but most amateur photographers should aim for shooting at a 35mm-equivalent focal length of about 300mm to 600mm.
  • Use a sturdy tripod! Even though shutter speed will be fast enough to get a sharp photo handheld, a sturdy tripod will make it easier to frame the photograph properly.

The next supermoon doesn’t occur until September 28, 2015,  so don’t miss this chance to get some super photos.

What they do want are thoughtful photos taken with high quality equipment. I don’t want to argue, but let’s agree that those cellphone photos just aren’t going to make the cut when it comes to photos of the moon.[/pullquote]
