1. Three separate shootings yesterday, February 19, left a 24-year-old man dead in Washington Heights and two men injured on Chicago’s West Side. Michael Powell was shot multiple times at about 4:54 pm on the 9100 block of South Ada Street and was pronounced dead at the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office at 9:20 p.m. His murder is the ninth this February, and the 52nd in 2013, one more than had happened by Feb. 18 of last year.
2. Residents of the Chicago Housing Authority senior housing complex at 42nd and Cottage Grove say they feel like they are prisoners at the complex and that employees routinely intimidate them and use abusive language. The residents also complained of bed bugs, rats and roaches in a letter sent to the building’s manager, The Rev. Leon Finney, in January, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The Kenwood-Oakland Community Organization is holding a press conference today at 10:30 a.m. outside of CHA headquarters to bring attention to their complaints.
3. The search for the next U.S. Attorney in Chicago has been whittled down to two Chicago-area lawyers who are both former federal prosecutors. Zachary Fardon is the chair of the litigation department for the law firm Latham and Watkins and he was the prosecutor in the corruption trial of former Illinois Gov. George Ryan, according to his law firm biography. Lori Lightfoot is a trial lawyer, investigator and risk manager at Mayer Brown, from 2002 to 2005 she worked for the City of Chicago in several roles, including as the chief administrator for the Chicago Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards, according to the Mayer Brown website.
4. Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd) is on a crusade to close the Near West Side liquor store Adam Food and Liquors at 219 S. Western Ave. Three people were shot in front of the store last year, and Fioretti said it is a disgusting hot spot for gangs and drugs.
