Reserve your veggie box for next summer

Chicago Talks, January 6, 2013

Growing Home is now accepting registrations for its 2013 Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programCSA. This is one of the local CSAs that operates around Chicago. It is time to think about fresh food for the coming year.

According to Local Harvest, “Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.”

With Growing Home’s CSA, buyers get fresh produce every week, grown on USDA certified organic farms. Local Harvest features a searchable map and database where you can find Growing Home and other CSAs near where you live.  Angelic Organics, for example, drops off shares at Andersonville/Edgewater (AE) in the 1500 block of Olive .

Angelic Organic’s Farmer John has been featured in a documentary that touches on CSA issues and more.

All of the proceeds Growing Home makes go to its job training program and pay for upkeep of the farm.

Growing Home’s CSAs come in two sizes: a family size box, and a smaller bag. The company offers pick-up locations in Lincoln Square, Logan Square, Joliet and Marseilles.

People interested in the CSA can sign up on Growing Home’s website.

Questions should be directed to Rebekah Silverman at 773-549-1336.
