Opinion: Who do they think they are?

Do our Representatives in Congress represent “the people” or the NRA? Ever since the 1999 Columbine Massacre in Littleton, Colorado, gun violence has escalated universally. Therefore, we should have Universal Background Checks on gun sales that are consistent with gun violence. “We the people” re-elected President Obama and sent him to Washington with a clear agenda to do something about gun violence. “We the people” sent our representatives to congress to help pass legislation and laws that would protect us and our children.

On April 18, 2013, the senate failed to pass legislation on Universal Background Checks and gun sales. “We the 90% of the people” are outraged and feel that our representatives are puppets for the NRA and their own personal interests. In my opinion, Representatives who voted against gun control legislation should be kicked out of congress.

While meeting with the president and hearing that congress had failed to pass sensible gun legislation Mark Barden said, “What happened in Newtown can happen anywhere. In an instant, any dad in America could be in my shoes. No one should have to feel our pain or the pain felt by the tens of thousands every year who lose loved ones to senseless gun violence.

“That’s why we’re here. Two weeks ago, twelve of us from Newtown came to meet with U.S. Senators and have a conversation about how to bring common sense solutions to the issue of gun violence. We came with a sense of hope, optimistic that a real conversation could begin that would ultimately save the lives of so many Americans….”

“We the people” are equally disappointed with our Representatives who did not vote for Universal Background Checks on gun sales. Who do they think they are anyhow?
