Journalism and creative work from Chicago's next generation of storytellers

Let me tell you about where I grew up: How race and class shape our hometowns

Chicago Talks, June 15, 2026June 19, 2026

Social justice artist Tonika Lewis Johnson’s response to the history of segregation in Chicago is visualized in her Folded Map Project, which shares Chicagoans’ stories about the stark differences between the south and north sides of the city.

Similarly, Columbia College students reflected on how class and race put a mark on where they grew up, by answering these questions: What should people know about the place where I grew up in? What are the stories I tell about my life there?

Read these powerful essays from Angel An, Natalie Hernandez, Tinto Tran, Charley Sonneman, Nana Flores, Cynthia Alaniz and Zariya Caldwell
