The Chicago Cubs baseball team haven’t won a pennant since 1907. Television hadn’t been invented. Radio hadn’t been invented. Its been a long time for the Cubs.
Jeremy Freeman, a fan and entrepreneur, has come up with a light-hearted way to lift the infamous Billy Goat curse, which, according to legend, has kept them out of the World Series since 1945, in a good natured, altruistic way.
He and some friends are working with World Vision, an international non-profit that provides goats to families for milk, meat products, and as a source of sustainable income to address the curse.
Sam Sianis, current owner of the Billy Goat Tavern owner and nephew of the guy who put the curse on the Club, has declared that the only way to remove the Billy Goat curse is for fans to show a “sincere fondness” for goats.
Today, Opener Day, and April 1st, Freeman unveiled his website www.ReverseTheCurseChicago.com where you donate to buy goats for people in the developing world who will turn those goats into a sustainable way of life. And, heck, if the Cubs end up winning, what Chicagoan would be disappointed with that?
You can find their text number so you can donate from the park, and a Causes page in Facebook but the site is only live for 103 hours, and the clock is ticking.
World Vision nonprofit organization delivers the goats to families in developing countries around the world. Those goats are better off outside the ballpark. In fact, one dairy goat can supply a family with several quarts of nutritious milk a day according to World Vision. The goats can provide extra cash because their new owners can make and sell cheese, butter or yogurt from the milk. They are prolific, and what we call in this tech age, “self-replicating,” producing as many as two or three kids a year, which can be sold for school supplies and other needs.
Jeremy and his helpers probably won’t make it inside Wrigley today, but you can look for them with buttons and information outside the park. They will be accompanied by World Vision representatives.
