The State of Arizona Speaks to Immigration Issues in Chicago

Community Cinema is a national civic engagement initiative featuring free screenings and curricula for films from the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Independent LensIn 100 cities and online, community members come together to learn, discuss, and get involved in key social issues of our time.

This Saturday you can get involved with immigration issues here in Chicago.  The State of Arizona, will be shown for free at Chicago Cultural Center in the Claudia Cassidy Theater, 2nd Floor at 2 p.m.

After the film there will be a discussion about local organizing efforts around immigration reform and taking a closer look at how Chicagoans are affected by current policies. with Gaby Benitez, Organized Communities Against Deportations (OCAD), Veronica Castro,Immigration campaign director at National People’s Action (NPA), Luis Gutierrez, Latinos Progresando, Reyna Wences Najera, Immigrant Youth Justice League.

The State of Arizona gets in the middle of the border state’s controversial immigration law SB1070, which is reshaping the national conversation around immigration reform. Click on the image to see the preview.

Presented by Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, WTTW Channel 11 and ITVS in partnership with Immigrant Youth Justice League.

The film captures the explosive emotions and complex realities behind Arizona’s headline-grabbing struggle with illegal immigration, which is reshaping the national conversation around immigration reform. The State of Arizona holds a mirror and asks Americans who they are, and who they want to be.

The State of Arizona will be shown on Saturday, November 16th at 2:00 p.m. Chicago Cultural Center in the Claudia Cassidy Theater, 2nd Floor.
