Don’t Leave Money on the Table, Negotiate Like a Pro

It’s on Tuesday, June 24 at Columbia College Chicago’s Journalism Department. 6 p.m. networking and the program goes from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Have you ever left money on the table? Had a negotiation go badly? Not asked for more than that first offer?  Learn what negotiation is, what’s in a hiring manager’s head, the do’s and don’ts, and other helpful tips. Our excellent panel will share their expertise. Then attendees will work in small groups to role play good negotiating, with our experts watching and offering advice.

Scenarios will include how to negotiate:

•    That first job offer

•    A promotion to editor

•    Freelance gigs

•    A move into a career outside journalism

Space is limited.

There is an admission charge for AWJ members and non-members.. Columbia College students and faculty get free admission.

SPEAKER BIOS

Lynn Hazan, President, Lynn Hazan & Associates, Inc., has worked as an executive recruiter for 29 years and a President of LH&A for 14 years. She specializes in communications, marketing and sales searches for clients throughout the U.S., with a special emphasis on the Chicago area and Midwest. Her clients are Fortune 500 and entrepreneurial companies, PR and advertising agencies, trade associations and not for profits.  Clients represent companies in technology, automotive, consulting, packaged goods, food, insurance, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, medical education, financial, legal and professional services, transportation, real estate, architecture, interior design and home furnishings, industrial products, manufacturing, publishing, advertising and public relations. A native of Montreal, Canada, Lynn graduated with a B.A. from McGill University, Montreal, Canada and an M.A. from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Amy Guth is general manager of RedEye and Metromix. She is the current president of Association for Women Journalists Chicago and is the author of the novel “Three Fallen Women.” Previously, Guth managed social media and search engine optimization at Chicago Tribune, where she also co-wrote a social media column and co-hosted the “30 Second Social” instructional series. She has contributed social media and technology reports to WGN Radio, WGN-TV and CLTV. Previously, Guth was co-host of ChicagoNow Radio, and later WGN Weekend.

Jody Michael is CEO and founder of Jody Michael Associates, a Chicago-based company that specializes in career coaching, executive coaching, trader coaching and organizational consulting to help companies create sustainable cultural change using accountability-based frameworks and metrics. She has taught, lectured, given workshops and participated in panel discussions at The University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business and School of Social Service Administration, Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, Southern Illinois University and Chicago Public Schools on a range of topics including neuroscience, the brain and change, linguistics and accountability, and successful entrepreneurship.She has PhD-level work at the University of Chicago in clinical social work.
