FLOW/Im Fluss Lights Up Couch Place Downtown, for Free

[pullquote]The block of Couch Place between North State and North Dearborn Streets may be Chicago’s greenest alley.

It was renovated in 2007, shortly after the neighboring building at 190 North State Street (formerly the State-Lake Theater) got a brand newstreetfront studio for WLS-TV.

Today, the alley is well-lit, paved with tasteful cobbles, and the walls are clean and lined with framed posters for various performances in the Chicago Theater District.  There’s even a great photo opportunity to get the back stage door of theOriental Theater/Ford Center for the Performing Arts (24 West Randolph Street).

In turning one of The Loop’s scary alleys into a perfectly reasonable thoroughfare for pedestrians, the city made a deliberate effort to make it “green.”
[/pullquote]FLOW/Im Fluss is a site-specific light installation in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the sister city relationship between Chicago and Hamburg by Luftwerk.

The installation on display from  Wednesday, September 17 through Saturday, September 20, 2014 in Couch Place Alley, at 171 N. Dearborn in the Loop. The show runs from 5 p.m. to midnight.

Inspired by the element of water and its all-encompassing connectivity, Luftwerk’s FLOW/Im Fluss visualizes the characteristics of the Chicago River and Hamburg’s River Elbe, through video compositions projected on water screens.

Based on scientifically collected measurements like oxygen levels, currents, contamination and chemical compounds, FLOW/Im Fluss interprets data from the two rivers to create a visual experience. The projected video will illuminate screens made of water—inviting viewers to immerse themselves into the flow of data collected from both rivers.
