Active Transportation knows there are intrepid souls who get on their bikes and ride to work and elsewhere all winter. On January 20, join them and your fellow bike riders in Daley Plazain Chicago’s Loop for the annual celebration of cyclists who don’t let low temperatures stop them from pedaling to work.
From 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Daley Plaza, located at Washington Street and Dearborn Street, there will be free coffee and hot chocolate, and the first 50 bike commuters who ride up can get either a free rear bike light or a free balaclava. There’s more, including a free bike safety check and a raffle for a folding bike.
Winter Bike to Work Day, organized by the Active Transportation Alliance, commemorates the coldest day in Chicago history–Jan. 20, 1985–when the official temperature at O’Hare International Airport was 27 degrees below zero.
It also kicks off registration for one of the best bicycle rides in the nation, the MB Financial Bank Bike the Drive which is held on the more likely to be pleasant riding weather, on May 27. Save $10 when you sign up for the event between Jan. 20 and Feb. 6. Sign up at www.bikethedrive.org.
