“America’s Sweetest Race,” the AllState Hot Chocolate 15k/5k, returned to the streets of Chicago Sunday. Organized by RAM Racing, the AllState Hot Chocolate 15k/5k is one of the fastest-growing races in the nation, with Make-A-Wish as the charity of choice.
The race included a 15- or 5-kilometer distance option for the runners, the majority of whom chose to complete the 5k race. Many see the run not as a competition but entertainment. Participants ranged from young to old, experienced marathoners to first-time runners and individuals to large groups of friends and family.
Both the 15k and 5k race began at 7 a.m. at the starting line in Millennium Park and continued together until the course split on South Michigan Avenue. The two courses then merged once again on the final stretch to the finish line in Grant Park.
Upon completing the race, runners received a goodie bag and a medal — in the shape of a chocolate bar for those who completed the 15k course, or the top view of a mug for those who completed the 5k course.
Zach Adamerovich, a 15k participant and experienced runner, said the race was a good experience overall.
“I usually participate in marathons so this was just like a regular thing for me,” he said. “I didn’t participate in the Chicago Marathon this year but I am doing the Disney Marathon this year and did the Chicago Marathon three years ago. So this was just another stepping stone for me.”
The Hot Chocolate race will return to Chicago next year, Nov. 8, 2020.
